FRBR is best grasped through several examples of different outputs - say, what a traditional OPAC screen would give you and what a catalog system based on FRBR principles would show for the same search query. There are many to be found in the Sources and Further Resources sections below but what follows is one such example.

RDA:s element RDA innehåller en uppsättning element som kan användas för att beskriva entiteterna och deras relationer, samt riktlinjer för hur dessa ska anges. FRBR comprises groups of entities: Group 1 entities are work, expression, manifestation, and item (WEMI). They represent the products of intellectual or artistic endeavor. Group 2 entities are person, family and corporate body, responsible for the custodianship of Group 1’s intellectual or artistic endeavor. The RDA element set has been mapped to FRBR. RDA elements and relationships inherit the value assigned to FRBR attributes and relationships. The RDA core elements were selected from those attributes and relationships which attained a “high” rating for any of the user tasks.

Most members of the profession can list the primary bibliographic entities: work, expression, manifes - tation, item (hereafter known as WEMI), and many can describe the three groups of entities that make up FRBR. Most descriptions of FRBR begin with a list of the enti-ties in the three groups, and then illustrate these entities The elements of the DC correspond to the attributes used in the FRBR. If the elements are used in a consequent manner - using a form of authority control and/or 'input guidelines' - the FRBR and Cataloguing Rules: Impact on IFLA’s Statement of Principles and AACR/RDA by Barbara And FRBR describes individual elements or attributes, indicating how each contributes to achieving each task. Today we might expand the use of FRBR to the rights management or preservation domains and add other tasks, like attributing royalties to or preserving.

The entities themselves are sorted into 3 groups. Each of the four FRBR entity equivalents – the work, expression, source, and item elements – allows a list of such relationship descriptions as its last child element. relationList provides a container for individual relation elements.
